As there's only one variant of the M3 available – the M3 Competition – your only real decision to make on spec is whether you want rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The former is lighter but the latter will get off the line faster and give you extra traction when the weather's bad, although it's slightly more expensive.
The differences when you drive on the road are pretty minute, so good is the all-wheel-drive system. We suspect you'd be happy with either, but if it were our money, we'd go all-wheel drive.

Because the BMW M3 cost more than £40,000 when new, you'll pay a flat rate of £180 of Vehicle Excise Duty plus a surcharge of £390 for the first five years from the second time the car is taxed. That's a total of £570 a year.
