The Citroen Relay is a super popular large van which can be seen on the roads multiple times daily. This is thanks to it offering a combination of large carrying space, plenty of body options and a durable feel to go the distance.
This van first arrived in 2006 with an updated version coming out in 2014. Crucially it was 2016 that the engine was overhauled to offer Euro 6 emissions compliant diesel output. But for those wanting a squeaky clean future-proof engine, it's the 2021 model and after which has the Euro 6.3 compliant rating, as well as a new trim structure.
You may have seen this called the Citroen Jumper as that's the name of this van everywhere outside of the UK. You may also think it seems familiar and that's because it shares the same body shell and platform as the Fiat Ducato and Peugeot Boxer vans.
These run on diesel engines with two power types to pick from in the form of 2.2-litre BlueHDI motors, both of which are manual geared. For long-term running costs this is the van that stands out from the others, says Citroen.
Key rivals for the Citroen Relay include the world famous Ford Transit, the high-end Mercedes Sprinter and the super reliable and spacious Volkswagen Crafter.
The Citroen Relay is a great option if you want a van that will keep costs down over the longer term, meaning both on fuel consumption but also in maintenance charges. This is thanks to efficient running, relatively affordable replacement parts and a solid build that's made to last.
The brakes in the more modern models have been heavily tested to ensure safety while the doors have also gone through rigorous testing to make sure they can withstand the daily beatings of a working van's life.
While the standard specs might not be amazing, there are plenty of smart extras available including rear parking camera, sat nav, lane departure warning and tyre pressure sensors.
There are four trim options to pick from in older models but just one in the newer setup, the older four are: X, Worker, Enterprise and Driver. The new single spec is the Enterprise Edition.
When it comes to storage the larger van option has an almighty 2.7 metre maximum roof height and a load area of 600 cubic feet (17 cubic metres) and takes 1,870kg loads.
Go for older models to make a saving but keep in mind that engine variation in terms of tax charges and ongoing running costs.

The Citroen Relay comes with the same 2.2-litre BlueHDi diesel engine but available in the 120 or 140 variations for slightly different power yet similar fuel economy. What's worth noting is that both feature a 6-speed manual gearbox and use the fuel-saving stop-start system as standard.
The modern setup gets you that Enterprise Edition trim which has air con, cruise control, heated power windows, 7-inch touchscreen with sat nav, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, DAB, Bluetooth and USB, steering-wheel controls and a telematics box.
Go for older models and you'll find those other trim options. The first is the X setup which is the most basic with features like rear doors with 180-degree opening, full steel bulkhead, electric windows, DAB radio, height-adjustable steering wheel and a sliding side door on the passenger side.
Step up to the Worker trim and you get cruise control, lower central glovebox, lumbar adjustment, traction control, underbody pressure plate, reinforced suspension, all-season tyres and front and rear mudflaps.
Then there is the Enterprise older level that offers touchscreen with sat nav, air con, cruiser control, rear parking sensors and lumbar adjustment.
At the top end is the Driver trim which adds rear parking camera, LED daytime running lights and headlights, auto lights and wipers, USB charging socket and tablet holder, plus a driver assist pack for added safety.

The Citroen Relay from 2007 to 2015 ranges from £290 to £365, sitting between Band H and J based on engine type and spec. For the newer models there is a flat tax rate for vans which is charged at £320 for the year.
