The Dacia Logan Stepway is the estate car variant of the Dacia Sandero Stepway, and based on the Logan MCV sold between 2013 and 2020. Stepway specification, introduced in 2017, means a chunky, off-road style appearance and an extra 46mm of ground clearance, at once making the Logan look a little less utilitarian, and a little more useful for outdoorsy types who may occasionally venture away from paved roads.
The Sandero and Logan were among the cheapest cars on the market when they were brand new and that value carried over to the Stepway models. While it’s not the best estate to drive, the Stepway is definitely more appealing than the standard car, helping to justify the extra money.
Small estates aren’t common these days, so the closest car you’ll find to a Logan Stepway is probably a Skoda Fabia Estate - or, if you’re prepared to go slightly older and slightly larger, but still like the off-road appearance, a Skoda Octavia Scout.
Dacia is far from the first company to offer a slightly raised, plastic-clad version of one of its cars, and it certainly won’t be the last. Just like models from the likes of Skoda, Audi, Subaru and Volvo though, the effect of chunky wheel arch extensions and a taller ride height is as appealing here as on much more expensive cars.
As a result, the Logan Stepway is much more appealing than the regular Logan MCV estate, despite being essentially the same under the skin. We called the MCV “cheap but not so cheerful” in our full review, but the Stepway certainly musters up a little more cheer, for only a little more money on the used market.
Of course, it’s otherwise pretty similar. Neither ride, handling, nor refinement match more sophisticated cars of this size (including Dacia’s more recent models), but the extra 46mm of ground clearance will appeal to those whose wheels occasionally leave tarmac, be that farm tracks, festival sites or on camping trips. Might help with the UK’s abundant pot holes, too…
Stepway models were based on Dacia’s higher-spec Logan MCVs so equipment levels don’t feel too far behind those of other modern cars, and the interior, while still basic, isn’t quite as austere as other Dacias either. The boot is impressively big too - on par with a Ford Focus Estate from the next class up.
The closest small estate to the Logan Stepway is probably the Skoda Fabia Estate. Skoda hasn’t offered a rufty-tufty Scout model for a while to really match the Stepway, though for more space and a better driving experience, you could always hunt down an older Octavia Scout as a Stepway alternative.

As the Stepway is already something of a variant of the conventional Logan MCV, it’s not a surprise that Dacia kept trim levels fairly simple, and this narrows down your choices on the used market. The earlier Laureate and later Comfort trims are basically the same and they’re probably the one we’d go for - if you need Apple CarPlay or Android Auto then make it the later Comfort.
LPG is something of a niche choice; go for that engine option only if you have an LPG-dispensing station nearby to make use of. Otherwise, both the TCe 90 and DCi 95 are good picks - the diesel is, as usual, ideal if you cover higher miles, while the TCe has similar performance, is a touch quieter, and is a good all-rounder - smooth and punchy in town but not out of its depth on longer trips.
The Logan Stepway was offered in only a few trim levels over the years, starting with Laureate specification, while later cars could be found in either Comfort or SE Twenty trim. Laureate and Comfort specs are nearly identical - the later car got better smartphone integration, but that was about it. SE Twenty was largely a visual package but did gain a reversing camera.

If you’re looking at a Stepway registered after April 2017, then you’ll pay a flat rate of £180 (at the time of writing) to tax either the petrol or diesel variants, and £10 less for the Bi-Fuel, as LPG is considered an alternative fuel by the UK government. Prior to April 2017, VED is CO2-based, but the tax saving over later cars won’t be huge - emissions in the 120g/km range for almost all models mean a £150 yearly bill.
The Stepway’s low prices and modest performance mean insurance shouldn’t be too expensive. The entire range sits in groups 7-11 (out of 50), and is on par with the upper end of the regular Logan MCV range - since the Stepway doesn’t include any of that model’s lower trim levels and less powerful engines.
