The Fiat Tipo is a family hatchback or estate car that offers a spacious interior while representing good value for money.
First launched in the UK in 2016, the Tipo offers a variety of options including 4-door and 5-door, petrol, diesel and bi-fuel LPG, as well as 5-speed, 6-speed and automatic gearboxes. This should mean there are lots of options for many needs and, crucially, lots of choice on both the new and used market.
This is a super affordable option that still gets you a family sized hatchback car with most of the basics covered in terms of needs. Running costs are kept low and driving is easy and comfortable, although you can see the savings have been made on the drab interior finish.
The engine range, broadly speaking, offers three petrol, and two turbo diesels with power ranging from 96 BHP to 120 BHP. In all cases you can expect competitive running costs and decent CO2 emissions levels which should keep longer term running costs to a minimum.
Even the basic trim comes with a DAB infotainment system, although it does feel a lot more basic than some other pricier cars offer.
Key rivals for the Fiat Tipo include the Skoda Scala, the Vauxhall Astra and the Kia Ceed.
The Fiat Tipo is the ideal car if you want a spacious hatch that works well, is easy to use and keeps costs down initially and longer term. If you want more exciting features then this is not the one for you – although the higher trim options can offer some more exciting extras.
The engine choices offer some power for those that need it but the general ride is a comfortable one, if not very exciting to drive. That said the seats are not the most comfortable so for those doing lots of regular longer drives, this might prove an issue.
The basic trim does offer some fun features like DAB and Bluetooth plus air con as standard. If you want to get more features you'll need to spend more, getting you alongside rivals like the Vauxhall Astra for specs and price point.
The engine is a standard 1.3-litre petrol with 95 BHP on the entry level model which gets a fairly decent 51 MPG. Combine that with low 99 g/km CO2 emissions and you're looking at low running costs long term.
There are three trim options to pick from: Easy, Easy Plus and Lounge, which can be applied across the range although some engine sizes only come with the higher two options.
The Fiat Tipo comes with 15-inch steel wheels and has a cloth interior as standard but with an Aux-in there is an option for basic smartphone connectivity – presuming your phone still comes with a headphone port.
The hatchback comes with a very generous boot that offers 440 litres of capacity as standard, making it ideal for families.

The Fiat Tipo comes in hatchback and SW estate versions with two petrol sizes and one diesel engine. There are three trim levels: Easy, Easy Plus and Lounge.
The Easy trim is the most basic and offers the most affordable Tipo, yet still does feature some decent specs, in the more modern models. These include cruise control, speed limiter, autonomous emergency braking as standard – ideal for safety and impressive at this price point. You also get DAB, Bluetooth, Aux-in and 15-inch steel wheels. But if you want more you'll have to upgrade.
Jump to the Easy Plus trim and you get the above plus a five-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, rear electric windows, parking sensors and 16-inch alloy wheels, plus LED daytime running lights. A lot for the amount you pay extra.
The top level trim is the Lounge offering which has the above plus it adds in auto headlights, sat nav, auto climate control, a rear-view camera, 17-inch alloys, fog lights, chrome grill surrounds and electrically adjustable driver's seat.
All models come with a three year or 60,000 mile warranty from Fiat as standard.
