You’re looking at another van with windows with the Ford Tourneo Courier, but while in the past that might have suggested something a bit rough and downmarket, today you don’t have to put up with draughty cabins and rattly window frames - the Courier is more like driving a Fiesta or Focus with an enormous interior.
Previously known as the Transit Courier, it launched in 2014 and has only recently been replaced by an all-new model. Practical touches include a spacious five-seat layout, twin sliding doors, a huge boot, and abundant interior storage - and being a Ford, it’s even quite good to drive too.
Alternatives include the passenger variants of the Citroen Nemo, Peugeot Bipper and Fiat Qubo, as well as more conventional MPVs like the Ford B-Max, Citroen C3 Picasso, and Skoda Roomster. The conventional MPVs do feel even more car-like than the Courier, but ultimately can’t offer the same van-like space.
Small cars aren’t always the most practical choice, particularly if you need room for weekend activities, sprawling families, or the extra space and accessibility for things like wheelchair access. But the Ford Tourneo Courier is one smaller car that does offer that room, thanks to it being based on the Transit Courier van.
That makes it one of the popular breed of van-based MPVs. Not the most desirable or exotic class of vehicle perhaps but certainly one of the most practical, and in the case of the Tourneo Courier, one of the better driving options too - like almost all Fords, the Tourneo is genuinely good to drive, with sharp steering, good grip, and a firm but controlled ride.
The petrol and diesel engine choices aren’t the quickest in the world but both are frugal, which is the main thing, and the Tourneo Courier is easy to drive in all its forms. Equipment levels are lower than you might find in a dedicated car-based MPV but still cover the basics - air conditioning is standard, for instance.
And it’s massive inside for a car that’s barely longer than a Fiesta. The 708-litre boot is more like you’d find in a full-sized SUV from several classes up, and the cabin is full of storage spaces. It’s more refined inside than some of its rivals, too.
Conventional MPVs like the Ford B-Max, Citroen C3 Picasso and Skoda Roomster are arguably more stylish and even more car-like to drive but can’t quite match the Courier’s space, while it feels more grown-up than other small van-based MPVs like the Citroen Nemo Multispace, Peugeot Bipper Tepee and Fiat Qubo. It’s an impressive all-rounder.

If you intend on using the car mainly around town then the 1-litre Ecoboost engine will be up to the job, and it’s both more pleasant to listen to, and ultimately quieter, than the diesel options. But it’s quite a small engine in a relatively bulky car so does begin to struggle with higher loads or at higher speeds, so the diesel may end up being the sensible choice if you’ve got more than just local use in mind.
Titanium trim feels a little more car-like than the slightly more basic Zetec, but from a practical standpoint it doesn’t offer anything significant over the Zetec. The entry-level car still has a smart and adaptable interior and while normally we’d say a touchscreen infotainment system is a nice item to have, the Zetec’s built-in smartphone dock actually seems more future-proof.
The Ford Tourneo Courier had a simple two-tier trim level structure, with the Zetec covering all the basics and the Titanium getting closer to the features you’d expect in a family car, rather than something based on a van. While having a touchscreen infotainment system is nice, the Zetec’s smartphone dock is probably a better solution as the car ages - since your phone will always be more up to date than an ageing built-in satnav.

If you’re looking at a Tourneo Courier registered since April 2017, then you’ll currently pay £180 per year in VED or ‘road tax’. Prior to this, you’re instead looking at a CO2-based tax rate, which means some models can be pretty cheap to tax - the 1.5 diesel with stop start produces 112g/km, which currently equates to £35 per year.
The Tourneo Connect’s insurance costs should be little more than you’d pay for a supermini like the Fiesta, or a small MPV like the Ford B-Max. Insurance groups go from 4-12, which is similar to the B-Max’s groups 8 to 12.
