Should you buy a Mercedes-Benz X-Class?

If you’re looking for a heavy hauler with a premium edge then the Mercedes-Benz X-Class makes an ideal used candidate, with the added touch of exclusivity adding to the appeal.

While the pickup lacks a little of the style and substance found in other models across the Mercedes-Benz range it’s certainly plusher than most utility vehicles. The Progressive trim model packs in plenty of features and functions but retains the practical commercial appeal of this truck.

You’ll get by perfectly well with any of the smaller diesel engines too, but the beefy V6 diesel is the one you’ll want if you’re going to have heavy loads and towing on your worksheet.

Slightly more affordable rivals like the Volkswagen Amarok or the Ford Ranger are viable alternative, while further down the budget list are the likes of the Nissan Navara, the Mitsubishi L200 or the Isuzu D-Max. Failing that, the Toyota Hilux is still one of the best no-nonsense options too.

What’s the best used Mercedes-Benz X-Class model to buy?

We love the X 350 d V6. It is a super engine, producing 258PS, and gives the double cab pickup a fittingly rich and premium feel. Trouble is, list prices reflect this, so while it’s the most desirable version, it’s not necessarily the best for real-world pickup buyers.

This is where the 190PS four-cylinder diesel comes in. No, it’s not as smooth, but it’s punchy enough in its own right, and costs a lot less. It also delivers better fuel economy, so will be cheaper to run – important when your working vehicle is being put through the small business accounts.

There are three trim grades, but Pure is just a bit too basic. It doesn’t even get painted bumpers or alloys. Best value is Progressive, while Power comes with a lot of fancy extras that look great on your driveway but won’t necessarily withstand heavy-duty use on the building site.

• Mercedes-Benz X-Class X 220 d 163PS: The basic four-cylinder diesel gets the job done and offers decent fuel economy, while offering 0-62mph in around 12 seconds. Expect an official 37.1mpg.
• The Mercedes-Benz X-Class X 250 d 190PS: The next step up if you need a little more power but don’t want to go the whole hog and have a V6. It offers a slightly better 0-62mph in 11 seconds. Economy lands in around the 35.7mpg mark.
• The Mercedes-Benz X-Class 350 d V6: The largest engine and one that produces 258PS, which therefore makes it a good bet if towing is on the cards.

What used Mercedes-Benz X-Class trim levels are available?

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class might be a pickup and therefore aimed at people who might want to use it for work duties. However, there are three trim levels that elevate it above most everyday workhorses.

• The Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pure is the base level specification for the pickup, which is easily discernable due to its black plastic bumpers and steel wheels. Seats are manually adjustable and have coverings that are lacklustre but durable. There’s semi-automatic air conditioning that sort of makes up for the basic approach. 
• The Mercedes-Benz X-Class Progressive is a little more interesting thanks to painted bumpers, chrome door handles and a generally more impressive front end thanks to the eye-catching grille. Elsewhere, there’s heated electric door mirrors, proper 17-inch alloys and black fabric upholstery on the inside. This is topped with footwell lighting and an auto-dim rear-view mirror.
• The Mercedes-Benz X-Class Power is the best option if you really want to feel that you’re behind the wheel of a Merc. There’s more chrome for starters but the spec also adds LED headlights, keyless go, folding door mirrors, electric seats with Artico leather, a stitched dashboard top and high-gloss interior trim. You even get sizeable 18-inch alloys. Plump for the V6 and you’ll get all this by default.
