Mercedes-Benz A-Class
Insurance group 15
The Mercedes A-Class has come a long way since the original model launched back in 1997. It might now be a much more formulaic small hatch design, but don’t dismiss it for that. The A-Class rivals the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series, offering good space, comfort and even driving fun.
Inside, the A-Class's dashboard is dominated by two large digital displays. One works as the digital instrument display, while the other acts as the other gateway to the infotainment system and the majority of the car's controls and settings. The graphics are incredibly sharp and it's pretty intuitive to use. It's nice to see some separate physical controls for the air-con.
Choosing the A 180 d does temper how much excitement you’ll have, but it’s frugal and group 15 insurance is not to be sniffed at. Find an older third-generation A-Class with the same engine and you could be looking at even cheaper premiums, starting at insurance group 13.
Mercedes-Benz B-Class
Insurance group 15
The B-Class is Mercedes-Benz's compact five-seat MPV that's designed for practicality and comfort. That does mean though that it's one of the most affordable cars in the Mercedes range to insure, with the B 180 d Sport falling into insurance group 15. Get it in AMG Line trim with the same dependable diesel engine and insurance only goes up another group.
While the buying public has fallen out of love with MPVs in favour of SUVs, Mercedes continues to plough on with the B-Class. Based on the A-Class, the B-Class has noticeably more space thanks to its taller design, with plenty of head and legroom. Passengers in the back have decent space, while there's a option to slide the rear seats forward to enhance the already impressive boot space.
The B-Class isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for a practical car to lug the family round in relative comfort, then it's certainly up to the job.
Mercedes-Benz GLB
Insurance group 24
Mercedes has hit the sweet-spot with the GLB for for those looking for a compact seven-seat SUV. It's significantly smaller than other seven-seaters like the Volvo XC90 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, but it's neat engineering makes its that much smaller.
Let's start with the styling - we think it looks really great, with a confident set of lines that remind us of the original G-Class. Then there's the tech. Using the A-Class and B-Class as its foundations, the GLB enjoys the same advanced twin screen infotainment system as its smaller siblings, while the quality of the interior doesn't disappoint.
As you'd expect, you're not short on space either, with occupants upfront and in the middle row of seats looked after for head and leg room. To get group 24 insurance you'll want to go for the AMG Line trim with the 1.3-litre GLB 200 petrol engine that delivers 163PS.
Mercedes-Benz GLA
Insurance group 27
The GLA compact crossover is designed to take on rivals like brilliant Volvo XC40 and Audi Q2. This latest version is a lot better than the older model, with a much more stylish and distinctive design, while there's now more space in the cabin.
Speaking of which, the interior is excellent as you'd expect, sharing a lot of the tech with the A-Class, including the excellent twin display. There's space for five, but if you need even more space, then the closely-related GLB is worth a look thanks to its extra row of folding seats.
Insurance premiums are more than the XC40 and to get group 27 you'll need to opt for the entry-level GLA 180 d Sport option. This features a modest 1.3-litre petrol engine, but there's a decent array of standard kit. This includes 18-inch alloy wheels, LED light, a 180-degree rear camera and some decent safety tech.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class
Insurance group 24
The C-Class embodies all that Mercedes-Benz holds dear and that’s hardly a surprise when this range accounts for such a large slice of the company’s sales. That also explains why they haven’t messed with the successful C-Class formula of good if not sector-leading space, superb comfort and build quality that would impress even a Swiss watchmaker.
Perfect for families then, the C-Class has a good amount of space both for passengers and luggage, though the boot isn't quite as spacious as some rivals. We're big fans of the interior design as well, with some lovely touches that gets the balance of modern and classic just right.
Sitting in Group 24 for insurance, this C 200 d SE model is not going to quicken your pulse with its performance, but economy is good and it smooches along quietly other than a hint of tyre noise at higher speeds. Mercedes-Benz announced a new fifth-generation 2021 C-Class model earlier this year, so look out for some good deals on current models.
Mercedes-Benz GLC
Insurance group 27
Taking on the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, the Mercedes-Benz GLC is a great luxury mid-size SUV that's perfect for the family.
The GLC sports a handsome exterior design that follows through to an interior that's packed with modern tech and plenty of creature comforts for a very upmarket feel. You won't be short on space either, with a large 550 litre boot that's a match for both the Q5 and X3. If you want even more space from your mid-size SUV, then you'll need to look at either the Jaguar F-Pace or Land Rover Discovery Sport.
All GLC's come fitted with 4Matic four-wheel drive for added traction, while there's a wide range of engines available. You'll have to plump for the GLC 220 d SE or SE Executive to keep insurance premiums as low as possible, but it does also deliver the better fuel economy as well.
Mercedes-Benz CLA
Insurance group 27
Like the look of the A-Class's futuristic interior but want something with a bit more style? That's where the CLA comes in. Designed to look like an elegant compact coupe, the CLA has four doors making it a happy fusion of sharp looks and proper practicality.
If you're planning to hunt out every twisty B-road with the CLA, we'll stop you right now though. While it looks pretty sporty, it's handling leans much more towards comfort and refinement rather than driving agility, making it a perfect car to help let those motorway miles slip away.
The CLA is also packed with plenty of tech that includes Mercedes's MBUX ultra-modern infotainment system, while as you'd expect, there's no shortage of quality finishing touches in the interior. Space is a little compromised in the back compared to the A-Class hatchback, but that's the price you pay for those sweeping lines.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe
Insurance group 31
Like the look of the C-Class, but want something with a little bit more of a wow factor? Step forward the gorgeous C-Class Coupe. With its sweeping roofline and striking body creases, it certainly looks the part.
With some stiff competition coming from the Audi A5 and BMW 4 Series, the C-Class Coupe needs to be good, and thankfully it is. Setting it self out from its rivals with a more relaxed driving experience, it's a fantastic car to chew through plenty of miles as the landscape drifts past. If if you opt for the C 220 d diesel to keep the insurance group in check, it's incredibly refined and comfortable.
We're also big fans of the interior, while there's a good amount of standard safety kit on offer too. To get group 31 insurance you'll need to find a C 220 d in entry-level Sport trim, though the AMG Line has now become the entry-point trim recently, which drives up it to group 35 insurance.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class
Insurance group 28
The E-Class is one of the most advanced cars Mercedes has ever made and a direct rival to the Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series.
As you'd expect for a car of this class, the E-Class comes with a host of advanced features as standard, including radar cruise control, LED headlamps, climate control and a nine-speed auto gearbox. There's some price options though that take the E-Class up a further couple of notches, including an impressive twin-screen panoramic display.
Incredibly comfortable, the E-Class is available with a wide-range of engines. To keep premiums low though, you'll want to opt for either the E 200 petrol or E 200 d diesel options in SE trim. All-in-all a very classy executive saloon.
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe
Insurance group 35
As the name suggests, the E-Class Coupe is based on the excellent E-Class saloon. That makes it bigger than rivals like the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5, which competes more directly with the smaller C-Class Coupe.
The E-Class Coupe bigger size means though that it'll comfortably fit four passengers, while the boot is a decent size as well. This is the perfect car for cruising down to the South of France...whenever that may be again.
While a V6 petrol naturally lends itself to a striking coupe like this, to come away with a car that falls into group 35 insurance will require you to opt for the popular E 220 d diesel in AMG Line spec, though the E 300 petrol engine is only a couple a more insurance groups up the ladder.
The cheapest Mercedes to insure right now is the Mercedes A-Class 180 d. This diesel-engined hatchback has group 15 insurance in a number of trim-levels, though the third-generation A-Class has insurance as low as group 13.
Mercedes is a premium car brand and its higher prices reflect this. That means Mercedes cars tend to be on average more expensive to insure than more affordable rivals. It's not just the value of the car though, but the engine and power output also play a big part in the cost of the insurance premium.
There's no simple answer here as both manufacturers have a wide range of cars that come with different sized engines, trim-levels and safety tech that all impact the cost of the premium. However the cheapest new BMW to insure is the 1 Series in group 16, and the cheapest new Mercedes to insure is the A-Class in group 15.
