Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW 2023 front charging

The new 2023 Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW all-electric family hatchback and estate have been unveiled ahead of a 2023 debut.

The battery-powered versions of the latest generation Peugeot 308 and Peugeot 308 SW will join existing petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid versions in the range.

The Peugeot e-308 becomes the brand's fifth electric car on sale, joining the Peugeot e-208 small car, the Peugeot e-2008 small SUV and the Peugeot e-Rifter and Peugeot e-Traveller electric van-based MPVs

With a range of up to 248 miles from a 54kWh, the Peugeot e-308 hatch will compete with models such as the Volkswagen ID.3, Cupra Born and MG 4. The e-308 SW is a more unique proposition, with the only other affordable electric estate available being the MG 5

The Peugeot e-308 SW is a rare electric estate car: only the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo and MG 5 fit into that category.

The Peugeot e-308 sits above the e-208 and e-2008 EVs, with a bigger battery and more powerful electric motor.

New Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW price and release date

Peugeot has yet to confirm pricing for either the e-308 or e-308 SW, but we can make an educated guess based on prices of other Peugeot models.

The Peugeot e-2008 starts from £33,700, but the larger, more high-tech e-308 also has a bigger battery and more power. We'd expect it to start from just under £37,000, similar to high spec versions of the plug-in hybrid Peugeot 308 but more than a base model Cupra Born. Peugeot adds £1,200 for the SW estate version, too.

Those prices will be for Allure trim, which is the mid-spec offering in the petrol, diesel and hybrid 308. It normally features all-round parking sensors and a reversing camera, 17-inch alloy wheels, tinted windows, part synthetic leather trim, sat-nav, and ambient lighting. Expect remote pre-cooling and pre-heating to feature too.

Peugeot has also confirmed the e-308 and e-308 SW will be available in GT form. This'll bring 18-inch alloy wheels, matrix LED headlamps, 3D digital instruments and various exterior and interior styling upgrades including 'Claw Effect' LED rear lights.

We also know that the Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW will arrive in UK showrooms from the second half of 2023. Expect orders to open a few weeks prior to their arrival.

New Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW: exterior and interior

In terms of the exterior design the Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW are broadly similar to the existing petrol, diesel and hybrid models. However there are some revisions that the eagle-eyed will be able to spot.

Both versions will be available with a new 18-inch alloy wheel design, specific to the electric version, which is said to optimise aerodynamics and help improve the car's electric range. There's also unique 'e-308' badging on the tailgate, plus a charging port which replaces the usual fuel filler cap.

The interior won't look much different either, with the same 10-inch central touchscreen with a configurable 'i-Toggle' shortcut screen below the main screen. There's also the brand's i-Cockpit digital dial and wheel design and a head-up display.

All of these elements are expected to feature new menus and display options, with the usual engine rev counter replaced by a power meter for the electric motor, plus a range display, charging display and a menu to let you keep track of your efficiency and electric car features.

Peugeot has also confirmed a  'Brake' drive mode, which increases the amount of regenerative braking to optimise energy recovery. This sits alongside the usual Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes.

New Peugeot e-308 and e-308 SW: electric motor, battery and range

Peugeot describes the electric motor and battery offering in the e-308 and e-308 SW as 'brand-new', indicating it's been developed further from that offered in the brand's other electric cars.

Indeed its specs do indicate that, with a more powerful 156PS electric motor than the usual 136PS motor in the other Peugeot EVs. It still powers the front wheels, although Peugeot hasn't provided acceleration or top speed figures yet.

The electric motor draws power from a 54kWh battery pack, which is slightly larger than that in models like the e-2008. It's sufficient for a WLTP cycle electric range of up to 248 miles, although final homologation figures have yet to be calculated.

We don't yet know if that range figure changes with the slightly heavier e-308 SW estate, or with different trim levels. But we do know that both cars will accept rapid charging at up to 100kW, enough to replenish the battery from 20-80% in less than 25 minutes.

Three-phase 11kW on-board charging is also provided as standard to allow a suitable home wallbox to full charge the car overnight quicker than the usual 7kW time.

Available driver aids include adaptive cruise control with a low-speed 'Stop and Go' function, long-range blind spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert.
