Used Ford Edge for sale: everything you need to know

The Ford Edge is one of the less obvious options if you’re looking for a large, comfortable SUV with generous space for five people and a big boot, but it’s nonetheless a great used choice. The interior looks and feels good, and it’s loaded with more standard features than found in many cars from premium brands. It’s really good to drive, too. If the Edge sounds like it might be the right car for you, you’ve come to the right place.

Should you buy a Ford Edge?

The Ford Edge is intended as a family car first and foremost, so let’s start by considering the interior space. In short, it’s vast. There’s easily enough room for five relatively tall adults to sit comfortably for a few hours, so a typical family of four is unlikely to find space at all lacking. 

It’s a similar story in the boot. It’s 602-litre capacity will swallow whatever pushchairs, dogs or monthly food shopping you want to throw in there. There’s no real need to pack light for a family holiday, either. Fold the back seats down and the space nearly doubles – useful when you need to buy a new fridge. It can tow 2,000kg as well.

On the road, the Ford Edge feels surprisingly agile for a car of its size. It’s only available with a diesel engine, which works away quietly enough in the background. You can choose from several different power outputs; they all get the Ford Edge up to motorway speeds smartly enough and cruise at 70mph happily, but the more powerful ones feel more relaxed. The ride isn’t the smoothest, but the seats are extremely comfortable so you don’t really notice. Four-wheel-drive models are useful if you regularly need to tackle rough tracks or tow a trailer.

Inside, you get a very lengthy list of standard features, so it’s great value. If you like sportier styling, check out the ST-Line version. If you want to feel like you’re travelling in the lap of luxury, the flagship Vignale is the one to go for.

There’s a lot to like about the Ford Edge. It’s hugely spacious and practical, really comfortable, costs relatively little for the sheer amount of standard equipment, and feels much better to drive than you might expect. Running costs are in the same ballpark as other large SUVs and it’s proving to be very reliable.

What's the best used Ford Edge model to buy?

Ford limited the engine you can have based on the trim level, which is frustrating for buyers who don't want to spend extra, but need to for four-wheel drive, for example. The Titanium trim comes with the 150PS 2.0-litre diesel and front-wheel drive, while the ST-Line and Vignale feature the 238PS engine and four-wheel drive.

There is a fairly sizeable gap in performance, and some buyers will prefer the all-weather security of having four-wheel drive, but we still think the slower Titanium is the best choice. It comes with the same eight-speed automatic gearbox as the more powerful car, has all the kit you need, and helps keep a lid on running costs.

The Titanium also has a softer suspension setup and smaller wheels than the stiffened ST-Line trim, giving the Ford Edge a better motorway ride. The less stressed engine is also noticeably more refined in this lower state of tune.

Used Ford Edge fuel economy and performance

The Ford Edge was only available with diesel engines in the UK. Ford’s latest EcoBlue engine was added to the range when it was facelifted in 2019. Capacity is 2.0 litres, but you have a choice of two power outputs. Both give perfectly adequate performance, but the more powerful of the two feels more relaxed when hauling heavy loads – useful in a car that can tow 2,000kg.

• Ford Edge 2.0 TDCi diesel: Offered in 150- and 180Ps forms, both work well in the Edge but the 180PS is the one to have if you can. It offers 47.9mpg and 152g/km.
• Ford Edge 2.0 BiTurbo diesel: This twin-turbo version of Ford's 2.0-litre turbodiesel motor gave a brawny 210PS and plenty of low-rev shove for easy acceleration, cruising and towing. It also gave 48.7mpg and 149g/km of CO2 emissions to improve on the 180PS diesel's figures.
• Ford Edge 2.0 EcoBlue 150 diesel – This model has a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 150PS. Acceleration is perfectly decent for this kind of car, with 0-62mph taking 11.2 seconds. CO2 emissions are 153g/km. An eight-speed automatic gearbox is standard and it has front-wheel drive.
• Ford Edge 2.0 EcoBlue 238 diesel – This has a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre, turbocharged engine, serving up 238PS. It gives usefully quicker acceleration, so 0-62mph takes 9.6 seconds. CO2 emissions are higher, however, at 176g/km. An eight-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive are standard.

What used Ford Edge trim levels are available?

After the Ford Edge was facelifted in 2019, only higher-spec models were available, including the luxurious Vignale (an entry-level Zetec had been offered previously). 

• Ford Edge Zetec: The original entry-level model gets 19-inch alloy wheels, DAB radio with nine speakers, touchscreen and SYNC 2, rear view camera, keyless start, active city stop with pedestrian detection, privacy glass, rear spoiler, automatic windscreen wipers, automatic headlights, Quickclear heated windscreen, Lane Keeping Aid, Traffic Sign Recognition and Active Noise Control.
• Ford Edge Sport: This model came with 20-inch black alloy wheels, unique front, rear and side sports bodystyling with dark exterior detailing, sports suspension, Sony DAB navigation with 12 speakers, Adaptive Steering, alloy pedals and black roof rails.
• Ford Edge Titanium: This model spanned both pre- and post-facelift line-up and became the starting-point trim level in the Ford Edge, but the Titanium is equipped like a top-of-the-range car.  Standard features include sat-nav, dual-zone air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, leather upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats, to name but a few. 
• Ford Edge ST-Line: The sporty-looking Ford Edge has 20-inch wheels, deeper bumpers, a rear spoiler and seats upholstered in leather and Dinamica cloth. Extra standard features include a powerful Bang & Olufsen stereo and a heated steering wheel.
• Ford Edge Vignale: The top-of-the-range Ford Edge is named after an Italian car design company that created some achingly pretty cars in the 1950s. It has lots of chrome exterior styling details, lovely plush leather upholstery and matrix LED headlights.

Used Ford Edge road tax

Earlier Ford Edge models registered prior to 1 April 2017 will have their road tax worked out based on their emissions. As a result, some models will pay £240 per year and others a slightly lower £200. For all Edge models registered from 1 April 2017, they pay a flat rate of £180 for 12 months' road tax.

How much is it to insure a Ford Edge?

Depending on which model you go for, the Ford Edge is rated in insurance groups 26 to 34 – out of 50 groups in total. That’s in the same ballpark as other SUVs of a similar size.
